NEW TREES IN 2020

In October 2020, the Association planted six new trees on the Green. One is a Norway Spruce across from the Hotchkiss Library. At some point in the future, this tree is expected to become the main Holiday Tree on the Green, as the existing spruce across from Town Hall is growing into other trees and no longer stands straight up. The other five trees are deciduous trees that were planted along Main Street and Upper Main Street on the northern part of the Green. Those trees are a Red Maple, a Kentucky Coffee, a London Plane, a Tupelo, and a Bi-colored Oak.

trees and Plants

The Association has planted more than 60 new trees of various species on the Green. When a new tree is planted, we water it regularly for two full years to ensure that it becomes well-established in its new location. We also provide maintenance of some of the older trees, such as inoculations of the remaining elms. Every three years we pay for all nine of the remaining elms to be treated to protect them against Dutch elm disease. The Association has also planted spring bulbs on the Green and replaced the Rose of Sharon bushes across from Town Hall.

Benches & planters

The Association has purchased seven teak benches, as well as twelve planter boxes, which we maintain year-round. This includes putting new plants in the boxes each spring and watering them over the course of the summer. During December and January we put lights on the small evergreen plants in the boxes, which brings welcome light to the Green during the long, dark nights of the winter.

The Association is the sponsor of the annual Tree Lighting in early December, one of the most wonderful and visible ways we celebrate the beauty and community draw of the Green. Funding for the Tree Lighting is provided by one of our long-time Trustees and by the Town of Sharon.
